Seventeen young artists from the Baptist University Master of Visual Arts programme will showcase their work at Koo Ming Kown Gallery from November 14-22, 2015, in response to exhibition theme “Un/Cover”.  

 

Triggered by the discords observed both locally and internationally in the past year, the team saw the concept of uncovering in new light:  that it isn’t just one moment of surprise, but an emotional process of noticing and internalizing what was covered, expressing and augmenting sensations through the act of uncovering, and resolving and moving on in the stage of recovery. The theme Un/Cover was coined, intended to be more than the literal meaning of ‘uncovering’.  The ‘/’ installed between the words ‘Un’ and ‘Cover’, serves as the visual clue of a mask, and empowers the word with the visual notion of Masking, Unmasking and, Remasking. The theme suggests a process based on the ebb and flow of emotional experiences.

They either graduated from the Baptist University Master of Visual Arts’ Studio Practice and Extended Media or Experience Design programs, or in the final year of studies, interpreted the theme based on their personal concerns and experiences with a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, sound art, len-based images, and performance.  Through seventeen artworks exhibited, the artists shared their own ‘Un/Cover’ journey, from exploring self-identity, relationships, potentials of people and materials, and definition of matters, to concerning for the environment and animals, urban development, cultural lineage,  and discrepancies between words and actions seen in the public domain.
